Belvedere Art Space | Rom Isichei Newsletter

30 Jun - 2020

Rom Isichei is a contemporary conceptual artist from Asaba, Delta state with an MFA from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. With more than 10 solo exhibitions and 15 collective exhibitions, Rom’s artworks are showcased widely in Nigeria and all over the world. Moreover, he has been listed on “ who is who” in contemporary Nigerian Art in the Smithsonian Museum of African Art Library, Washington DC, USA.

Rom uses a myriad of materials in rendering the human life. In his “ Reverence of Thoughts” series, he uses an intricate layering process involving sawdust and acrylic. Through this process, he achieves a deep 3 dimensional quality creating expressive and imposing works.

In Rom’s controversial portrait “Bring Back My Yesterday”, featured in this newsletter, the artist uses melodramatic grays and a touch of red to bring to life a remarkably distinct portrait of a memorable face. Through this face he creates space for a deep and direct connection and communication between the artwork and the spectator. This tranquil profile with slightly parted lips and praying hands provokes spiritual introspection and intellectual exploration.
